Metro bus transportation Posted: Thu August 16, 2007 04:30 PM UTC
Hi! Would it be safe for a single female to be traveling alone during daylight on the Metro buses while out in Los Angeles? I would be traveling from Santa Monica up to Melrose Ave and the WeHo area.
I would prob. take the metro 218 along Santa Monica Blvd to Fairfax, then transfer at Fairfax to Melrose. Is the intersection at Fairfax & S.M. Blvd safe for waiting for a bus? I know that's a pretty safe area of town, but I just want to make sure since I would be all alone that no one would bother me.
Thanks!!

Honestly I haven't taken the Metro in L.A. yet, but would say that you should be safe enough.
Many buses have a camera on board not to mention the driver and other passengers. I'm sure that the Metro as well, has some sort of safety precautions.
Of course, no one can guarantee that you wouldn't be bothered ever, but the chances are low and there would always be someone around to help.

The entire area from Santa Monica to West Hollywood is safe, you'll be passing through Century City's high rise office buildings, past Beverly Hills's shopping area and into West Hollywood. Though I haven't taken that particular public transportation, I, too would say it is very safe. Of course, watch your purse, bags, etc. as you would anywhere.
Actually, I would say most all of Los Angeles is safe and friendly. We are one of the most diversified cities probably in the world. We have most every nationality living here. And remember that every single person who lives in America is a descendant of an immigrant. Even "American Indians" came from Asia over the Bering Strait a mere few thousand years ago. We are all from somewhere else originally so there is a wonderful friendliness and acceptance here.
We have many signs in both English and Spanish and sometimes you'll find Armenian, Korean, Chinese, etc also used. For instance, many ATMs offer several language options.
Thank you for wanting to visit Los Angeles, our vibrant and exciting city.

Thanks for all your helpful replys! So even if I'm the only one standing at the bus stop at Fairfax & Santa Monica Blvd I should be fine?

Yes you should.
I'm not sure what it is you are expecting to happen.
In any case, there are very few places in L.A. where you would ever be truly alone. Especially during daylight hours the streets are full of people. Even in the "seedier" areas, most of the people are decent human beings.
Of course, any psycho can strike any where in the world, so in that sense you can't have a one hundred percent guarantee, but in general as everyone else has said, take normal caution while traveling and you should have no problems.
If you are really so nervous about waiting at a bus stop, why not just take a taxi?

Bus stops are generally safe as it is doubtful that you'll be the only person there - always confirm with the bus driver that he does, indeed, stop where you want to go - my students have told me that public transportation can be quite confusing as not all buses make the same stops - some are express.
