| Jerusalem | Dead Sea swimming Posted: Wed August 15, 2007 11:04 PM UTC
Hello; I was hoping to take a swim in The Dead Sea when I visit. Is it warm enough all year to do that? If not, which months should I avoid? Thanks..Bob

Dec/Jan/Feb are the coolest months with temperatures, according to Google, at Jan 11-20C, Feb 13-22C, Dec 13-21C which would seem to be nighttime low and daytime high.
A dip in the Dead Sea is what you'll have as it's recommended that no more than 10-15 minutes is spent in the water due to the salt/other stuff leaching into the body which can send the blood pressure up. Perhaps another VTer can be more specific than my 'other stuff' - I can't remember all the details given on my trip there.

Hi and Shalom:
You should have no problems with temperatures, even in "deepest" winter the water temperature will be pleasant in the afternoon since it is warmed by the sun and only a few meters deep it becomes warm quickly. During summer it is best to avoid the middle day hours because of the excessive heat, it can reach over 45 or even more... The length of time you remain in the water also depends on the heat of the day and the water itself. If you have not heart problems or blood pressure problems you can stay longer than 30 minutes. Also be sure to drink enough liquids as the temperature, dryness and salt in the water all tend to dry you out. Martin

In addition to what was already written, please bare in mind that "reasonable temperaturs" would differ from one to another, often depending on your country/region of origin. I saw crowdes in the UK go in the sea in June in masses: I touched the water and there was no way I would have gone in it for leisure...
The upper/surface level of the Sea would be rather warm in most of the year. It is easily absorbing the solar heat and slowly cooling off. If there will be some 2-3 days with clowds and wind, it might get rather cool but never really too cold to enter it. Sometimes the water deeper then a meter or so, would be chilly.

Swim in the Dead Sea ? I don't think so :-) it is more a dip or float - a very unique experience but swimming is not recommended - however the temperatures are OK most of the year - bye Mary
