good news. the school holidays are at the end of sept-early oct. 22 Sep - 7 Oct
check out this link

hmmm...where to stay? depends on your budget. the manta sun city resort is great as it has water slides and the apartment would give you more space for the kids compared with a hotel room. check this www.wotif.com link
http://www.wotif.com/hotel/View?hotel=741&page=1&viewType=all
this site is great as it links you to many hotel sites from the one page. the maps are also good. do check around as you might get a better price elsewhere.
also good is the marriott surfer paradise
http://www.wotif.com/hotel/View?hotel=2772&page=1&viewType=all
both of these places are just off the centre of surfers...about a 10 minute walk
as for attire...shorts and t-shirts/short sleeves

The Gold Coast is home to Schoolies Week in late November so be very careful to choose your time for visiting. School holidays finish in early October and then start in late November/early December depending on the school. When we holiday on the Coast, I book our accommodation through Queensland Accommodation Corporation (07) 5495 7139. You can choose from a great selection of quality apartments for a very reasonable prices. You buy a voucher through these people then book the accommodation directly with the hotel etc. and pay the difference to the hotel. We have used them for years now and it is all legit. We prefer to stay at Coolangatta, which is the NSW end of the coast. The beaches are lovely and you are away from the Surfers Paradise crowd. Main Beach (the other end of the coast) is also nice and you have a good bus service to get around to theme parks and shopping centres. Pacific Fair is the largest shopping centre on the Coast. It will take quite a few hours to see it for the first time. You could get the train from the airport into the city and change at either Central or Roma Street (not sure where the GC train leaves from) for the connecting train to the GC. You will then need to get a taxi to your hotel. You could also call TransInfo and they will give you times and prices and maybe a few suggestions on getting from the train station to your accommodation. Queensland Rail may also be able to advise if there is a bus service from the train station to your accommodation. You could also hire a car at the airport and drive to the Coast (approx 1.5 hours) At 9 am it will be an easy drive as the morning traffic has cleared. The weather is starting to get a little warm by November so shorts and t-shirts will be perfect. Have a great holiday.
