Martinique Ethnic group distribution in what city?
Posted: Sun August 12, 2007 10:49 PM UTC
Are there any ethnic cities? Is there a "chinatown" area in Martinique? What's the ethnicity distribution around the island? (like are there more native Martinitians in one city? or more Asian people in another?)

I am going to Martinique in a little over a week and we still have to decide on where to live. Ive looked into Les Trois Ilet, Les Anses d'Arlet, Ste. Anne, and Le Francois. Is there a city that strikes out to anyone? Any recommendations?

I am interested in relaxing beaches, snorkeling fun, relatively big cities, etc. Please help! Thanks!

Hello there,

I am from Martinique but leaving in the U.K.(sorry if my English is not perfect!)
From my experience of native rather than tourist, there are not really ethnic cities in Martinique. You might see more "European" people in the South (in the area you mentioned) but on the whole, the population is pretty mixed.
If you want to leave close to big cities like Fort-de-France or Lamentin, then you might want to stay central rather than going to the South. The traffic can be awful between the South and the capital. I think Francois or Ducos is a good compromise.
For beaches, snorkeling, the South is definitely the area to go for. All the places you mentioned are very close to each other.
I don`t know much about the North as I come from Francois apart that it's "greener" and can be a bit wet compare to the south.
Just so you know, in Les Anses d'Arlet, there is a boat which takes you to Fort-de-France in about 20min. This is much quicker than driving to the city.

Of course, you can visit a gothic city and an intergalactic area near the spatiodrome in Fort de France...Someone said they meet indians but I think its a joke...
