Can anyone tell me how far it is between the two? I know there is a bus route, but would it be too far to bike to from Schwangau?

and it is also rather flat !

amazingly flat as a matter of fact -- we were passing through the area 2 years ago on our way to Italy, I made a specific note in my scrapbook that this would also be a very suitable area for wheelchair-handcycling. Mind you, there are a couple of drumlin-shaped hills especially when going north from the proper foothills. With a halfways decent bike, these should be no obstacle though for a wonderful bike trip.
