Lucerne Are All Hotels Noisy?
Posted: Sat August 11, 2007 11:58 AM UTC
No sooner had I made reservations for the Astoria hotel than I contacted my travel agent to find another one. After Googling around, I found out that not only do they have renovation work starting at 7:00 AM; the nightclub (or is it just the bar) noise doesn't stop until 2:00 AM (4:00 AM on weekends); that leaves only 3 to 5 hours of sleep noise-free. My other option was Schiller hotel; no renovation, but some people wrote about the bar noise late at night still being an issue.

Are all hotels in Lucerne like that? Are there any bar-free, renovation-free hotels available? Till the end of August at least? This late in the season, I couldn't find many other options, but if any one can know a good place, please let me know.

I just got back from 4 weeks in Italy and there seemed to be bar/cafe or renovation noise everywhere - I mean I felt like the entire country was under renovation and that everyone but me was out late partying. I did have a wonderful time though. I would recommend some high quality ear plugs - they work like a dream but don't use them if you have to get up early because you will sleep through your alarm.

Thanx...
I just read about your hotel experience and hope things won't be that bad. Funny I was already contemplating using earplugs as the only realistic solution. I've already contacted the hotel about my 'noise' concerns. They thought I was requesting a reservation and told me that (for the dates I gave) they were fully booked but assured me that they can provide me with a quite room later. I know that rooms vary in their noise-level, but unless I find an alternative hotel, I might just have to risk it.

Yes the hotel in Lucerne was quite interesting. No outside noise but the inside noise was pretty amazing.

I just got another email from the hotel manager assuring me that I will not be affected by the disco/bar noise. The construction noise starting at 8:30 might be considered a wake-up call. I'm already looking for earplugs just in case. Now that I got that out of the way, my next question would be: should I spend ALL my six days in Lucerne, or should I save the last day for Zurich?

Six days in Lucerne may be a lot unless you will use it as a base to work out of or enjoy just sitting around. I have heard that Zurich is pretty interesting - all I have done is spend a great deal of time at the airport with flight delays - the airport is not interesting.

Good point. I'm already thinking of getting a free-pass train ticket for the surrounding region. Being obsessed with transportation solutions for our auto-centric culture, I've always wondered how the Swiss system really works.

Try www.sbb.ch and experience the trains. They are definatly worth it. The Waldstaetterhof in Luzern is my favorite hotel.

Globetrott has some nice "off the beaten path" villages on his Lucern page. Seems Brienz is nice for instance.
