Bad Reichenhall What was Bad Reichenhall like in 1946?
Posted: Thu August 9, 2007 02:20 AM UTC
I realize that this a rather strange question, but my father was stationed in Bad Reichenhall from 1945 to 1946 as part of 9th division of the U.S. army. I believe he lived in the kaserne on the edge of town that was still there when I last visited in 1988. Unfortunately, I really never got talk to my father about what Bad Reichenhall was like following the war. I do know that he enjoyed being stationed there and became extremely friendly with a local dentist and his family. (Dr. Rah) I remember my father telling me that this dentist was rather well known throughout the area and for that matter throughout Germany. As a matter of fact, he did rather extensive dental work on my father the quality of which amazed any American dentist that he ever saw. As partial payment for the dental work, my father drove the doctor around and ran errands for him in his pre war Opel Kapitan. I believe the doctor and his family lived in a house overlooking the city very close to the cable car.
Getting back to my original question. I would really like to know what it was like living in Bad Reichenhall in 1945=1946 which will hopefully give me some insight into what my father experienced. Maybe someone even knows something about the doctor and his family. I plan on visiting the area once again in a few weeks and would very much like any information someone might be able to give me. Thank you in advance.

According to Wikipedia, the city was almost completely destroyed during a bomb raid on April 25, 1945.
