I'll be in Surabaya 22-25 August 2007. I'm looking for a mid-range hotel less than USD40@night. The ideal location should be near to restaurants and shopping plazas. Any tips? Thanks in advance

I just back from Surabaya last week and stayed at Inna Simpang hotel on Jalan Tunjungan. The hotel was just fine for me since it is within walking distance to Tunjugan Plazas (TP1 to TP4) and other attractions in the city. However, you may also consider other hotels such as Hotel Tunjungan (next to TP1), Hotel Majapahit, Sheraton & JW Marriot - all are in the city centre itself within walking distance to the malls. Take note that some of these hotels are slightly higher then your budget.

The published rate is approx IDR500,000 but the hotel was having promotion when I was there and I paid IDR300,000 for the standard room. They also have rooms without breakfast during weekend for IDR275,000. Check details form its website (http://www.innasimpang.com/index.html) or you may enquire with the hotel directly.

You could stay at the Hotel Paveljon ( mentioned in Lonely Planet Indonesia book) which has rooms from 77,000 for a double. Big old Dutch hotel- very pleasant- visited there last July though I did not stya there as I had already found a little Indonesian losmen for 50,000- very basic but I enjoyed it.
Beats that other horrid little backpacker place called Bamboo Den-yes it is really a den.
