Cape Verde Translation Advice Needed Please!!
Posted: Tue August 7, 2007 05:47 PM UTC
Hi there,
My husband and I will be travelling to santa maria in october.I am extremely allergic to all nuts, to the extent that I can die if I eat any nuts (including nut oils, almonds etc), and not sure what language will be spoken by the waiters in Cape Verde. I need a few sentances written down so i can hand them this when ordering food in restuarants. Something that says....'Im allergic to all nuts, and if i eat any nuts i will die. can you please ensure my meal is nut free?' If anyone can be of assistance, I would be extremely greatful to you.
Many Thanks,
Catherine.

OMG
Where did this translation to portuguese come from?
A "porca" is a sow (female pig). Automatic internet translators are tricky. Be careful. You would be telling them that you are allergic to pig. That's what any portuguese speaking person would understand.

You are allergic to all kinds of "frutos secos", dryed fruits, by the letter, is how it's said in portuguese.
Nozes=walnuts, amêndoas=almonds; avelâs=hazelnuts, amendoins=peanuts, cajus=cashew nuts

I'd write: Sou alérgica a todos os frutos secos (nozes, amêndoas, cajus, etc). Por favor certifique que esta refeição não contém quaisquer frutos secos, pois poderão causar-me a morte.
You shall be fine with this. I'd reccomend you tell about this allergy on arrival at the reception as well.

Have a good time in Cabo Verde!

They speak Criolo, but the official and school language is Portuguese. They will understand it in hotels and restaurant, for sure. But don't use the first translation, it's not correct... The second is proper Portuguese.
Have fun in CV!

Yeap, it happens.
By the way, nuts can also be translated into "porcas" when you talk of screws (parafusos), screwdrivers( chaves de parafusos) etc.

Maria

By the way, I may go to Cabo Verde in October as well, as my husband will start a new job over there. He´s joining a scotish company that is going to build a bunch of holiday resorts in several islands. Oct 5Th-7Th is a possibility. See you there?
