other than what's in my luggage and my passport.

Do I need vaccinations?
Should I treat this like a trip to Mexico: avoid the water, stay in the populated areas, etc.?

By the way, I'm going to Santo Domingo for a long weekend. We're staying at the Hilton. Anything I should know about the hotel/area.

Tap water is NOT drinkable so buy bottled water. If you buy fruit, wash it before you eat it. I'd say take the same precautions as in any other place: have your wallet/camera bag in sight at all times, don't flash your money or wear lots of jewelry, don't go to bad neighborhoods (those are away from the tourist places anyway) or alone when it's late at night. In other words, don't make yourself an easy target for thieves.

The area around the Hilton is nice and safe, as far as I remember it, so enjoy your long weekend.

Stay far away from the water! A few years ago my friend got extremely sick. Luckily we were at a resort with a doctor. It was quite costly to receive the help also. So if you want to remain happy and healthy during your stay......stay away from the water. I did like the D.R. and would consider another stay!
