Saint-Tropez Planning a trip to St Tropez / Cannes & Monaco
Posted: Tue August 7, 2007 02:20 AM UTC
Hi there

My boyfriend and I are holidaying in Cannes on 11th Sept 07 for 10 days. I've been trying to find out about a few things but to no avail...can anyone please help?? Im so excited :-)

Questions are:

1) Is it easy enough to get a boat trip to St Tropez from Cannes? I so, can I book something online or any idea how much they cost on average....certainly not looking for my own crew....just a public poorpers tour please heee heeee.

2) I've hired a car so we can get to as many places as poss. Any other places anyone can recommend that we should visit apart from St Tropez (by boat), Cannes, Nice and Monaco??

3) This might be me being naive or extremely stoopid....can the general public (the poorpers again) get into Club 55? If so, any idea on how to book? The website doesn't give any indication how apart from a phone number.

4) Just a general guide on how much the cost of living is. I've found out about Cannes - seems suprisingly normal (i.e. bottle of water €0.50, 3 course meal €35). Was just wondering about St Tropez and Monaco. We have spends of around £2000 for the whole 10 days, does anyone think we need more?? Jeepers!

Thanks so much for your help. I've been on the net for 3 days looking for as much info as I can, but these are the last few questions I have.

There are many beautiful hilltop towns on the Cote d'Azur. The hilltop town of Eze (between Nice and Monaco) is breathtaking and is worth a visit. Possibly just allow a couple hours on a day when you will be between Nice and Monaco. The artists village of St. Paul de Vence is also worth a visit. One method I use for planning a trip, check out the website I've listed below. It shows various tours offered for this area, leaving out of Cannes. You can then start to decide what sounds interesting and then: 1) start planning these tours on your own terms, or 2) book tours that sound interesting to you.

Hi Deb

1. Boat trip is simple a boat runs from Cannes to St Tropez daily, cost €40 takes aprox 1.5 hours leaves cannes at 10.15 then leaves St Tropez at about 16.30 its a nice ride. You MUST make a reservation tel 04 92 98 71 30 but I cannot remember the name of the company sorry.Best Dyas to go are Wednesday and Saturday as there is a huge market in the Place des Lices

2. Menton is nice as are Gassin and La Garde Freinet Ramatuelle. Saint Maxime is a nice little town as is Beaulieu-sur-Mer. Ventimillia in Italy is a short hop and holds a HUGE street market on a Friday and its easy by train from Cannes.

3. Almost anyone can get into Club 55 if they can pay its OK if you want to rub shoulders with Russians and Americans and the odd celeb(I have no problem with Americans or Russians BUT I go to France to meet French people) Lunch from €60 each (Bargain basement choices from the menu only though and NO champers) IF you want to get a table you MUST book by phone in advance and you WILL get bumped if a celeb is spending big dont let anyone tell you otherwise your reservation will have miraculously have never been put in "The Book" as you will be told by a surly waiter! Happened to a good mate of mine still their loss he is a multi millionaire but doesn't look the part. A tip: wear your lables on the inside here its all very understated and very expensive apart from Sunglasses and jewelery.

4.The cost of living on the cote is high about the same as central London but the exchange rate will have added about 30% from 2008 for Brits. ST Tropez is expensive it has a very short season they don't want package tourists (They do not spend enough)they want it as exclusive as possible and they will charge for everything and will not feel remotely embarrassed to charge you €11+ for a coke at a good table that is about £11! and €5 for an ice cream.

5. Spending money £1000 is about £100 per day OK in normal towns restaurants and supermarkets its simple to work out but even then £100 a day will not go that far.

However in St Tropez and Monaco its not going to last at all if you "large it" example: Jimmys bar in Monaco its about £20 a drink, prices in The VIP Rooms in Cannes and St Tropez are spiteful to say the least!

Have ageat trip it really is the best piece of coast in the world IN MY Humble Opinion!
