New Hampshire Camping Suggestions in the Lakes Region of NH
Posted: Mon August 6, 2007 07:04 AM UTC
Hi, could somebody please suggest a good camping spot in the Lakes Region of New Hampshire. My main requirement is that it be very close (and have easy access) to some body of swimmable water (e.g., Winnipesaukee).

Many thanks in advance!

Gosh, you'd think there'd be a ton of campgrounds around Winnipesaukee but none come to mind. The real estate there is too expensive to "waste" on cheap rent like camping. Most people only come by lakeside property around there by inheriting it. There are probably more camping opportunities in the Ossippee area. Still in the Lakes Region, on the eastern edge.

When I was a kid, we used to camp every year at a campground called Shawtown, on Danforth Pond in Freedom, NH, which is located on a string of lakes connected by a river which eventually connects to Ossippee. We loved the place, but it has since been bought and turned into a "camping resort". Not sure about the new management but I intend to try them out next year. Their web site is:

Anyway, the lakeside location is great. From their web site, it looks like the beaches haven't changed much and they've still got canoe rentals, etc. I highly recommend the canoeing - we used to have marathon canoe trips from there, making our way from lake to lake, dragging the boats over beaver dams, and through coves filled with water lillies.
