Goreme Whirling Dervishes
Posted: Sat August 4, 2007 01:24 AM UTC
Our trip to Turkey draws near and I have to make my final plans.
We arrive on the 25th September.

I would like to see the Whirling Dervishes while I am staying in Goreme.
I have heard that they only perform once a week, so I need to know, which day and where and do I need to book?

Ballon rides, how much do they cost and are they worth the money?

Hotel, I am looking for a nice hotel (not a backpacker type hotel) that gives you the comfort and also the "feel" of Goreme, recomendations please.

To see the Dervishes, take a baloon ride and see the chimneys in Cappidocia, how many days do you think I should spend in Goreme? (we are coming from Alanya)

Thank you.

Hi ,

The Whirling Dervishes perform every night during the summer at Sarihan Caravanserai which is 15kms from Goreme , and costs around £17 per person including transfers . The balloon rides are definitely worth doing although they are not cheap , around £100 per person . They usually take off at dawn and you will be picked up and then dropped back to your hotel . The flight usually lasts about 1 hour . I really do think that if you are going to Capadoccia then you should stay in one of the unique " cave hotels " . Here are some links that might be of use . The owners of the hotel also own a company called Turkish Heritage Travel and can arrange balloon flight , whirling dervishes etc . if required .

For the ballons ride, you can check the website of Goreme ballons. They are cheaper than Cappadocia ballons, altough very serious

I discovered a wonderful new hotel this year (I'm living in Ankara, so I go frequently in Cappadocia): the Assiana house (www.assianahouse.com). I really loved it because it is in the same time very authentic (a real cave room) but very classy. I highly recommand it, but it is in Urgup, not in Goreme.

By the way, why stay in Goreme, if your not the "backpacker" type? Urgup would be quieter, and theyre are some fine dining option for very cheap price (I love the Sömine restaurant).

You should spend 2 full day in Cappadocia (so, if you are coming from Alanya, 3 nights.

Do you intend to rent a car? If yes, then you should stop at the underground city of Derinkuyu.

You will love Alanya where I spend my pension time. I returned to Ankara on July 22 for votes. I dont decided yet the time when I will be in Alanya. What a pitty. we could have good time together. If I bee at Alanya end of Sept. I will write you a privat letter. Please chech your pages.

Or returning from Goreme if you decided to came to Ankara you can call me

In Alanya vist "Dimcay" the Dim River on the Tourus Mountains. End of sept. is the best season for Alanya and Cappadocia.

hi there just got back from turkey today,
I would recommend seeing the whirling dervishes in istanbul, as it is the same performance, only cheaper and more convenient. There's too much to do in goreme, than to spend an evening seeing the dance.
Also, would definately recommend the balloon tour, any co. is okk. DO NOT BOOK tours with ROCKTOWN TOURS< they suck. Go for the green and red tour, and the balloon tour.
ALso we stayed at elifstar cave hotel. Very comfortable, and reasonable. You can google it.
take care
