is it possible to buy bagged ice in the markets or coops in switzerland? we will be driving around for almost a month and will have an ice chest/cooler in our car for drinks, etc.

Hi, you can't take your car to Zermatt so would you still take your cooler? It seems cumbersome to haul on the train from Tasch to Zermatt unless you have to have it for some reason.

exactly! id just settle for fondue or raclette and some good white wine and maybe even some souvenirs and leave the ice for another time!

I have not seen ice available. In any store in Austria or Switzerland. Ice is also limited at hotels. However, I have a suggestion for you. IF YOU MUST HAVE ICE> Rent a studio apartment for the time you are in zermatt. Go to the Zermatt website.Zermatt.ch. click the English Flag on the top. You will then be in english. Look for accommodations on line. Find a studio apartment. Most of them have websites. You can see the rooms. They all have refrigerators with little freezers. We have used plastic bags to make ice. At the train station in Taesch you can rent a wagon for 5 swiss francs which you could carry most of your luggage to Zermatt including your cooler. However, look for a place close to the train station so you can wheel your luggage. Electric Taxis are expensive. In the coop you will pay abt. 1.25 swiss francs for abt 1 (between 12-16oz of coke)abt. $1.15. If you are looking to use it for liquor then making the ice is your best bet. THE WATER IS GREAT TO DRINK. If you have any other questions let me know.

How about collecting/compacting snow from one of the passes that are open when you drive over?
