What kind of hotel are you after? The Grand Hotel du France is a very decent budget hotel. See my Tunis page for details

I'm not sure what your budget is, but if you can afford it, you could try the Dar el Medina in a beautiful old house in the medina. Here's the link: http://www.darelmedina.com/
Otherwise, the medina hotels are all basic budget hotels costing between 5 and 20 dinars a night. If you can get hold of a guidebook (either Lonely Planet or Rough Guide...the other guides only list more expensive hotels), and can speak reasonable French or Arabic, then you could use the telephone numbers to try and reserve a room...a good idea if you are arriving late at night, as the medina is a dark place, quite daunting if you are looking for a hotel and have no idea where you are going. There are a couple of hotels on the square at the main entrance to the medina (Bab el Bahr)...the Hotel Medina above a cafe, and the Hotel Marhaba on the other side of the square...also nearby, down a backstreet, is the Hotel Milano. The first two must be very popular, because every time I've tried to get a room, they have been full, but i have stayed at the Milano, which is cheap, friendly and fairly clean...and also close enough to Bab el Bahr so you can't really get lost trying to find it. The streets around Bab el Bahr just outside the medina are full of hotels, so finding somewhere to stay isn't such a problem. December will be cold though, so check the room has adequate heating and hot water before you decide to stay. As for trips outside the capital...well, as I said, December will be cold, so the coast will be quite miserable. The best idea would be to head south to the desert oases, maybe somewhere like Nefta which is a beautiful town and not too touristy.
