Lazio Rome to Sorrento - Drive or Rail??
Posted: Wed August 1, 2007 05:05 PM UTC
Hi folks -

My original plan of taking my mom to see where her parents are from around Bari, has grown to the Amalfi Coast and has grown again to Rome. My plan is to fly into Rome and spend a few days, go to Sorrento to spend some days around the Amalfi Coast, Capri, Pompeii, and then to drive across to Bari.

My question is would it be best to use public transportation in and around Rome until I get to Sorrento or is it worth it to rent the car in Rome and drive down to the Amalfi Coast??

Any advice would be much appreciated. I am doing this on my own and want to make it a wonderful trip for my 80 year old mom.

Grazi,

Phyllis

Don't even think of driving around Rome; there are lots of restrictions, parking is extremely difficult and traffic is chaotic. The city is very walkable with an excellent, inexpensive public transport infrastructure (bus/tram/Metro).

As for getting to the coast, I'd use the train; Italian trains are very pleasant, imo.

As mentioned, it is easy to take the train from Rome and cheaper than renting to get to Sorrento. In Sorrento, you can rent the car as you leave for Bari. Capri is by ferry and you can during certain times of the year take the ferry to Positano. Unless your mother (80) is fit, Positano is a lot of hill climbing stairs. I would go further south to Amalfi and except for the Catherdral (many steep steps) the town is walkable. Over be Bari is the town of Alberobello with the Trulli homes that you and your mother may enjoy exploring. Sorrento to Bari is reached by car in around three hours drive.

Thanks so much for all the advice. I think that's settled, public transportation in Rome, train to Sorrento and car to Bari.

You folks are wonderful!!
