Bath Day trips from Bath
Posted: Mon July 30, 2007 12:33 PM UTC
Hi there
I will be in Bath for 4 days in September and seek help in planning day trips from the city:

1. Day 1 - sightseeing in Bath itself

2. Stonehenge, Salisbusy and Windsor - does anyone know of a travel agency that does this tour from Bath?

3. Oxford, Stanford-upon-avon and cotswold tour - again does anyone know of a travel agency that does this tour from Bath?

4. One option is to visit Bristol that's if the Oxford-Cotswold tour takes in the experience of the area (do they give you enough time in Cotswold for lunch or something). I would really like to spend more time in Coldswold - are there any nearby town/villages that I can take a bus to, where one could do short walks, visit a country pub or catch afternoon tea - typical British experience and be back in Bath by the evening.

Thanks very much in advance for all your suggestions.

S.

This company appears to be OK

Google to see more.

Public bus to Tetbury would be a good trip, you may even see Prince Charles.

Here is a journey planner: http://www.transportdirect.info/TransportDirect/en/Home.htm?cacheparam=39

If you go by train to Windsor is the good idea at you type “Windsor main stations” at the above website because Windsor Main Station lies close to Windsor Castle.

Another tour company which will take you out of Bath is www.scarpertours.com . I suggest you explore the options on this page from the official Bath tourist info site:

http://visitbath.co.uk/site/tours/tours-out-of-bath

Any tour will let you have an hour or so for lunch somewhere, and will have sundry other stops too (for toilets/photos etc).

You could get to Oxford, Bristol or Windsor by train if there is no tour (other than the more expensive private ones): takes around an hour and a half (bit longer for Windsor), and there are fairly regular trains. Look at www.nationalrail.co.uk for times and fares (put in Bath Spa as your departure point). Stratford isn't feasible by train; takes too long.

Tetbury is a very good recommendation.

Malmesbury will have a bus from Bath and the Abbey there is historically very important.

I would say that both Tetbury and Malmesbury are not 'true' quaint tourist destinations but both have their own charm.

For a smaller, quaint village that may well have a bus from Bath, try Castle Combe.

Castle Combe is small and you could easily walk round it in 20 minutes but equally, you could visit a pub there or take 'tea' (or do your walk) and extend your stay by hours (it is very safe there).

I live in Bristol, it has some fantastic parts to it but it would depend what you were into. I personally would always prefer a country walk to a city.

As I say, I live 13 miles from Bath, if you have more specific questions (i.e. you hear of a place to go and would like advice) don't be afraid to mail me).

Best wishes,
Martin
