| Kathmandu | Quiet and central hotel in Tamel/Kathmandu Posted: Sun July 29, 2007 06:56 PM UTC
Hi,
I will stay in Kathmandu about 10 days. I need a very quiet (no traffic noise, no musics at night) hotel in Kathmandu (not necessarily very budget - 20...40 USD/night), with hot water, air condition or heating, etc. (I am very noise sensitive. Can anyone recommend a good quiet hotel in Kathmandu? Is it a good idea to stay in Thamel? (Rough Guide writes that it is a long walk from all the sightseeing points. So, it is something like Khao San Road in Bangkok - tourist ghetto?) Leon |

Mmmmm You are asking for something in finding a quiet hotel in Kathmandu !!
I Always stay at Kathmandu View Hotel, This is in a quiet area in North Thamel but you do hear music until around 11 and then a few dogs barking in the night and early traffic on the ring-road. But it’s one of the better places that I have stayed for peace and quiet !! and only around $10 a night !! Details on my Nepal page under Hotels. I wouldn’t say that Thamel is a tourist ghetto -- most visitors to Kathmandu stay there, a lot the popular hotels and restaurants are also there. Dhurbar Square is about a mile away and the Monkey temple is a similar distance, Most of the other sites you would need to hire a bike or taxi to see where-ever you stay !! I have written a few tips on things to se around Kathmandu, You might be interested Have a great trip Rob

No where in Kathmandu valley is noise free... Dog barking all night, people go to bed early and rise early, they have no concept of being quite and caring about there neighbours... I'd head out to Boudha, there are guest houses there that are cheap and a lot quieter than Thamil. You're only about 20 minutes by cab from central thamil (about 130 rupees or £1). There's also a great coffee shop there (Little Britain Coffee Shop), great place for meeting fellow travellers who can advise you about quiet accomodation... have fun

Go for Vajra hotel, across the river from Thamel/Chhetrapati, but still within walking reach. In addition to trekking tourists past the backpacking age and some mid-level cost grouop tours, they have special facilities for long-term visitors, writers, artists etc. I do belive I have a tip on my pages - or did I dream it up? I stayed there a year ago.

Hi. I strongly recomend you the International Guest House (see my Kathmandu page if you need adresses). It's near the center and the busy and touristic Thamel but far enough to be quiet. Some noises you can't avoid: dogs and trafic. I stayed there for 4/5 days and the staff is very kind and the hotel very pleasant, with all the commodities, internet included.
