| Pompeii | where to stay? Posted: Sun July 29, 2007 04:08 PM UTC
Ciao! My husband and I have one night from Rome to Capri, and we would like to visit Pompeii. We have never been to Italy before, and I can't find a solution in the guide books.
We do not want to stay in Naples. Should we stay in Sorrento, or is it better to stay somewhere near the Vesuvio stop on the Circumvesuviano train? We will be arriving in the evening of Sept. 15 and do not need to be in Capri until the evening of Sept. 16. Reviews state that 3 hours in Pompeii is enough. Thank you. |

I'm not sure what you mean by saying you can't find a "solution" in the guide books. A solution to what?
If I were going, I would stay in Sorrento - only about 20 minutes by local commuter train from Pompeii. Relatively easy to get to Sorrento from Rome. Take a train from Rome to Naples, then the Circumvesuviana train to Sorrento. It makes a stop at Pompei Scavi - Villa dei Misteri, and the end of the line is Sorrento. However, I would say that three hours is not enough. Pompeii is HUGE! The tours arranged by guides at the entrance take two hours, but you certainly don't see everything. My first time there I spent all day. But be careful if going on a hot day - very little shade in Pompei. If you need more detailed directions on how to use the trains, let me know.

Thanks so much for the input..... "Solution" means "which is the better place for us to stay."
Is there something about staying in Pompeii that I should know? You both suggest Sorrento. A full day in Pompeii is probably best, so we are looking into Hotel Diana. Our destination is Capri, and Pompeii is just a stop-over. I'd rather explore Pompeii than Sorrento, and this way we don't have to back-track (although the distance is not far). Thanks for the offer of train help. I believe we stop at the Naples/Garibaldi station, then go down a floor and catch the Circumvesuviana and get off at Scavi? Sorrento hotels/B&B are booked, or else too $$$$$ for just a place to sleep for tourists who want to see as much of this historical area as possible. Thanks again!
