Hi, I'll be in Munich on Sept 23, 2007 and I want to spend the day traveling to see the Neuschwanstein Castle. I do not feel a desire to go inside the castle, just want to see the grounds, the views, the bridge, the lake. I do not want to drive myself, but am willing to take the train or bus or tour group. I've never taken a European train before.

If I take the train, where do I get off the train? Do I then take a bus from the train station to the castle? Is there a bus from Munich to the castle? Or do you suggest a tour company from Munich?

I'll be alone so want to know if this is easy to do. Thank you for your help!! It's my last day in Europe so I'd hate to get lost...hehe.

If you want to get a train you can get a train to Fussen, then get a bus to Hohenschwangau from there (a few minute journey) to see the castle.

There are also bus tours to the castle available from the tourist info in Munich. I think maybe the best thing would be to go to the tourist info when you get to Munich (if you are there for a few days) and ask them which is the best tour to go with. There are lots of coach trips as it is a very popular place so it should be relatively easy to do!

I think I would change my mind about seeing inside its wonderful too.
Yeah You will get great pictures from the bridge.
The other castle is worth a look also and if you make your own way you should have time to see both.
Go to the tourist office by the railway station in Munich for info.
And then decide which is best for you, its a one day round trip whatever you choose. The trip may include entrance fee if you go with a tourist bus.
Remember to ask if its in english or you may find that its in german only.

Train and bus info above is correct. When you get there, you will find horse and carriage rides up to each of the castles. They are fun if you are interested. You don't go the entire way to Neuschwanstein but get quite close. There is a nice restaurant near the carriage stop with great castle views.

We pre-booked this tour from the US prior to leaving for Munich. You print a voucher and present it to the driver the day of the tour. WE LOVED IT! For $65 USD you get a visit to Linderhof (the very complete and fully decorated King Ludwig "castle"), Oberammergau, and Neuschwanstein. It is a full day trip but everything is taken care of. The tour DID allow enough time to walk up to the bridge and includes entrance fees to both castles. Well worth it.

This is an update to my previous post to answer your questions. No, the tour offered by Viator.com does NOT include admission to both Linderhof and Neuschwanstein. According to the website, the entrance tickets cost approximately 12 euro, total. Linderhof is SPLENDID inside and definately worth an inside visit. All tourists to Neuschwanstein get dropped off at the bottom of the hill / mountain in the town of Fussen. You will be responsible to get up to Neuschwanstein either by walking (thats what I did) or by taking a horse-drawn carriage (NOT included in the tour price and I do not know the price). When you get to the top, follow the signs to "hike" to the bridge (no charge - free). It is a little bit more of a hike, not in total distance but in the little steeper slope and the slightly more overgrown path. I did see people of all ages and fitness levels going to the bridge so I am sure that you can do it. This tour allows you to see so much so quickly (Linderhof, Oberammergau, and Neuschwanstein).
