| Bellagio | Getting to and from Bellagio Posted: Fri July 27, 2007 05:24 PM UTC
I will be arriving in Bellagio on October 12th. I am planning on taking the train from Florence to Milan and then to Varenna, finally taking the ferry over to Bellagio.
I will be departing Bellagio on October 15th, headed to Venice. I am planning to reversing my route to Milan and then taking a train from Milan to Venice...but I've heard that I can also take a ferry from Bellagio to Como and then just one train from Como to Venice. So I'm kind of torn and unsure of what to do. Any help would be greatly appreciated. I've never traveled In Italy via train before...and I'm a bit nervous. Also...do you just drag your luggage on the train with you??? Thanks in advance for any suggestions! |

1. To my knowledge (and the trenitalia website), there are only two direct trains from Como San Giovanni to Venice all day - one at 12:54 and one at 13:54. Otherwise, nearly all trains go to Milan first, where you have to change to go to Venice.
2. I took a quick look at some other possibilities like Varenna and Lecco, but they didn't have any direct trains either. 3. Since the trains to Varenna also go back to Milan to change to go to Venice, the train portion of the trip is faster if you leave from Como, even if you have to change in Milan, because Como is closer to Milan. However, the ferry ride will be much longer, I would assume (not having taken it)...but it may be worth it ;-) 4. Yes, you carry your own luggage onto and off the train...a good reason to never travel with more lugagge than you can easily carry. Bill

Hi Kristin,
See my packing list of what to take to Italy for 3 weeks and it all fits in one carry on bag. Have a blast. Gail

Hi,
Fastest ferry will need an hour to reach Como, about the same time you go by train Varenna - Milan. For this reason faster will be to go Varenna - Milan, because even that Como- Milan trains are more frequent, ferries will limit your choices.
