Hi John,
The journey by train takes about 1 1/2 hours. There are no direct services and most of the trains from Bergamo go to Brescia where you must change for Villafranca di Verona. I cant help with buses

Bergamo itself is a lovely town and it would be useful to know how long you will be there so as to best advise you about Verona and Sirmione.
The previous poster is correct re having to change stations to reach Verona. However, you might have to change at Rovato although Brescia is more common. Also, the station you want for access to the centre of Verona is Porta Nuova and not Villafranca. The journey time can vary from 1hour 30mins to 2hours 30mins depending on the type of train and the length of time between trains when you change. The fare is approx 25euros return 2nd class as long as you don,t use the Eurostar which is much more expensive. Outside the train station is also the bus station where you can access transport to Sirmione the journey taking approximately 1 hour. I don't think you can do both justice in the same day, which is shame as they are both in the same general direction. If you have to choose, go to Verona and visit Piazza Bra and Piazza Erbe. Sirmione is nice place for a break itself but not my idea of a daytrip. Why not take a trip to beautiful Varenna on Lake Como only 1hour 20mins from Bergamo changing at Lecco. At less than 10 euros return, its a trip you cannot afford to miss. The regular ferry accross to Belaggio takes 20 mins and is also well worth visiting and can all be done in one day easily. The national train service webpage is below and if you just play about with it you'll soon get the hang of it. Not nescessary to purchase tickets in advance. http://www.trenitalia.com/en/index.html The bus timetable you require for Sirmione can be found at http://www.trasportibrescia.it/upload/orari/estivi/LN026.pdf All the best, Billy16

verona is a great visit and if you need a place to stay that is reasonable and accomodating contact my friend federica de rossi at info@lospite.com. this is my favorite city in italy and we have gone there on several occasions - the weather will be not too bad at the time you are going but a jacket and sweater will be needed - enjoy the city, the gelatti, and the home of romeo and guiletta!
