| Trinidad and Tobago | Is there a ferry from Trinidad to Margarita Island? Posted: Thu July 26, 2007 05:56 AM UTC
I will be going to Trinidad and Tobago in November and wanted to go to Margarita Island after. Does anybody know if there is a ferry that goes directly from Trinidad to Margarita Island, or is the ferry from Chaguaramas to Guiria, Venezuela the only option. Alternately, does anybody know if it is possible to hitch a ride on a yatch or other boat from the harbor.
Thanks, Ron |

I will also be going to Trinidad in late October to mid November and was wondering the same thing! I'm also trying to get to Venezuela.

I was unable to find out anything about the ferry, but speaking with someone who has a boat in the marina at Chaguaramas (just west of Port of Spain), it sounds like there are private boats going to Venezuela that you can get a ride with.

Oh yes, Pier Marines ferry takes you there - we had a nice trip over. But after arriving the Guardia Nacional and customs police apprehended me, my wife and two kids and strip searched me and after that two times more during the taxi trip through the jungle to carupano.

Well, there is a ferry (Pier 1) that leaves Chaguaramas weekly at 8:30 AM every Wednesday for Guiria Venezuela and returns the same evening. You are supposed to buy the ticket the day before, but if they are not full (we were about 1/4 full) you can buy it the same day. It is expensive though, about TT$414 per person, one way and also TT$75 departure tax (I think). The worst thing, they make you buy a return ticket even if you do not plan to return via ferry. They said the Venezuala Immigration requires this, but nobody in Venezuela asked us for a return ticket. I think it is just a ploy to make you buy a roundtrip. Also, if you do not have a yellow fever vacination, you will get one free before disembarking in Venezuela. They had a nurse and she used clean needles. This is a very expensive immunization in the US (usually more than $100). As for Venezuelan Customs, they searched our luggage very thoroughly, but were not so bad, they just took forever. They say they have a problem of drug smuggling, but since Venezuela is a conduit for Colombian drugs, I think more would be going out than coming in.
Aloha! Ron
