| Mannheim | Suggest some weekend plans.I'll stay at Mannheim for 5 weeks Posted: Tue July 24, 2007 02:34 AM UTC
Hello,
I am traveling to Mannheim and first time to Europe. I'll be in Germany for 5 weeks. Please suggest some good destinations and some information about connectivity. I would like to visit Paris and Rome too. It would be great if you can help me in planning my 4 weekends in Germany? |

Paris is connected by ICE trains with Mannheim. Only 3,5 hrs.
For a weekend trip to Rome you have to fly. Both are however not the ideal weekend trip, a long weekend would be more suitable. You should at least explore some sights you can reach on VRN tickets from Mannheim. Heidelberg of course http://www.cvb-heidelberg.de Speyer (cathedral, technical museum) http://www.vrn.de/FRAMES/karten_plaene/content.html http://www.technik-museum.de/uk/ Würzburg (the residence) http://www.schloesser.bayern.de/englisch/palace/ob Also interesting: Ladenburg (old town), Schwetzingen (palace), Neckar Valley (castles), Sinsheim (the main branch of the technical musuem). There are lot's of intesting places in the VRN area Wissembourg (France) http://www.ot-wissembourg.fr/ Worms http://www.worms.de/englisch/tourismus/index.php Wertheim http://www.tourist-wertheim.de/ Bad Wimpfen http://www.bad-wimpfen.de/showpage.php?lang=2 There are 24 hour tickets which are for the whole VRN network EUR 13,00. For 4-5 zones (Heidelberg, Speyer) EUR 8,50. There is a special weekend rule: if you buy this ticket on a Saturday it is valid till the first weekday 3am.

In addition to abalada's post:
If you go from Mannheim to Heidelberg via Weinheim, you'll need a VRN network day pass for 13 Euro. If you go there directly,a 5 zone day pass will be sufficient. Often people not fluent in German get this mixed up and have to pay a fine of 40 Euro.

There are S-Bahn trains and regional trains from Mannheim to Heidelberg which need 10-15 minutes.
Than there is the tram line 5R. Which makes a round trip Mannheim - Weinheim - Heidelberg - Mannheim, i.e. there are clockwise and anti-clockwise trams. The direct 5R trams (anti-clockwise) need 45 minutes. The ones via Weinheim need 1,5 hrs. Thus the fine is with EUR 1 per minute stupid detour just fair ;-) By the way - Weinheim itself is also worth a visit. http://www.weinheim-marketing.de/index.php?option=
