Will be in Lima overnight so looking for a good hotel in the centre of town. As I am only there overnight and want to see as much as possible I am trying to avoid staying further out in places like Miraflores even though they may be nicer.

You could try the Sheraton, on the beginning of Paseo de la Republica, or Hotel Bolivar smack in the centre on Plaza San Martin (if it's open again). Although I doubt if that will be any shorter drive from the airport than going to Miraflores. But it's your choice.

Dave, you might want to check this web site for better choices of hotels in Lima,
http://www.tripadvisor.com/Hotels-g294316-Lima-Hotels.html As for the Sheraton, unless you like rather ordinary and mediocre hotels then I think you will find hotels with better, unbiased reviews at tripadvisor. suerte SAM
