| Trieste | Travel Venice to Trieste to Piran Posted: Sun July 22, 2007 03:13 PM UTC
We arrive at Marco Polo Airport (August in the morning)and want to take a train to Trieste. Should we buy tickets in advance or on the day we arrive? From Trieste, we would like to go to Piran. Do the buses run regularly during the week and how long does it take? A taxi is expensive and Ferry schedule from Venice to Piran is inconvenient time. Thank you.

Here is a schedule for the transfers from and to Marco Polo Airport http://www.atvo.it/orari/pdf_airport/mpmestrefs.pdf
Trenitalia´s (Italian Railways) website http://www.trenitalia.com/en/index.html According to this page http://www.virtualtourist.com/travel/Europe/Sloven is Piran not well connected to the rest of Slovenija, Italy. Jesper

If you look at the Trenitalia website (www.trenitalia.com/en/index.html), you will see that the large majority of the trains that run from Venice Mestre to Trieste are regional trains. These trains don't take reservations. When you buy a ticket, so long as there is room to stand, you can get on. For this reason, there is no reason in buying these tickets in advance, especially since due to the vagaries of air travel, luggage pickup, buses to the train station, etc., you might not be sure of which train you can get.
There are a few trains that are InterCity of one sort or another; some of them may have all seats reserved and some may have some open seating. In any case, if there are open seats on the next train, you can get the reservation right then and there. The strangest thing is that some of the regional trains make the trip in 2 hours while others take 3. Take a look at the website to get a feel for this, since you'd hate to get on the slow one if you could wait a little while and get a faster one. Note that you want to go to Venice Mestre train station. There is no point in going to Venice Santa Lucia, since you have to go through Mestre to get to Santa Lucia anyway. There is frequent bus service from Marco Polo to Venice Mestre (see the airport's website). BIll

I found this webiste, in italian... but as it's timetables, it's easy to consult
http://www.saf.ud.it/orariPercorsi/ts-pirano.htm it says that the times in yellow do not run on monday. When i took that bus years ago, the bus did not run on Sunday. Keep this in mind, although it may have changed
