With 6 persons you can get special group tickets (Gruppe & Spar) with 50, 60 or 70 % discounts for the trains.
http://www.bahn.de/p/view/international/englisch/t Night train is also an option. Special SparNight tickets for a 6-berth couchette are EUR 39,00 pp. https://buchung.nachtzugreise.de From Füssen to Munich (or Munich airport) you can use the Bavaria Ticket. A mini group ticket covering all local trains in Bavaria (Füssen is only served by local trains). With 6 persons you need 1 x Bavaria Ticket (for up to 5 persons) EUR 27,00 1 x Bavaria Ticket Single (for 1 person) EUR 19,00 Validity of the Bavaria Ticket Mo-Fr: from 9am till 3am next day Sa,So: from midnight till 3am next day

late September: Oktoberfest time
Thus the chances to get cheap flights or discounted train tickets is not really high. If you can travel on a Sa or Su you can make this trip with regional trains only using the Happy-Weekend-Ticket (EUR 33,00). As this ticket is valid for 1-5 persons you would need 2 of them. Thus EUR 66,00, i.e. EUR 11,00 per person from Füssen to Berlin. The Happy-Weekend-Ticket covers also the U-Bahn, trams and buses in Berlin. DB timetable http://reiseauskunft.bahn.de/bin/query.exe/en From: Fuessen To: Berlin and select as means of transport "only local transport". Will be a 11,5-12,5 hrs trip then. And a couple of changes. But if you fly you've also 3 changes at least (Munich Hbf, Munich Airport, a Berlin Airport). There is enough time on some changes to get food and beverage supplies and do your own catering servise for yourself on the trip (regional trains don't have dining or bistro cars).

Thanks for the replies. We just came back from the trip.
For various reasons (interests and schedule), we ended up going in the opposite direction and through different cities. We (3 of us instead of initial 6) took a train from Berlin to Prague and then fly EasyJet to Basel where we rented a car and drove to Fussen, eventually returning it at Frankfurt. Initially we were hesitant about renting a car because we are not familiar with the road and the language. The roads are actually very good and there are plenty of signs. We did bring a GPS, so we never got lost. We are glad that we rented a car because the south side of Germany is very scenic. We ended up stopping at many places to take photos. We also ventured to Zugspitze, the tallest peak in Germany. The Alps are really beautiful. I highly recommend driving around in southern Germany. Thanks again for the various advice in the forum. Raymond
