Guadalajara Where to stay
Posted: Thu July 19, 2007 07:21 PM UTC
I will be coming to Guadalajara during Christmastime just to chill out, walk around, see sites, visit shops, eat good food, and not think. I am a middle-aged woman traveling solo. Which is a nicer place to stroll around in - the Tlaquepaque area or the historic center area? Are things open in both areas during the week of Christmas? Thanks for all suggestions and opinions.

I think you'll find that Guadalajara will seem very quiet at that time of year, in comparison to most of the rest of the year - because Christmas is very much a family holiday in Mexico where people stay close to home, many businesses close and lots of people head to the beach (or elsewhere) for one of the two national vacation periods each year. Yes, there are some Christmas-related activities and maybe someone familiar with Guadalajara will see your question and give some advice.

Hello Myriad. I think is a verry good time of the year to visit Guadalajara. The city has a very good options of excelent gastronomy, and a lot of interesting places to visit.
The best place to stay is down town, and then goo for one day to Tlaquepaque.
Another day excurtion is to Tequila town. Other, to Ajijic, one more to the ptiramyds of Guachimontones. You will have a very good time. Bienvenida. Sergio

Hi Myriad -
Stay downtown - there is the great market, beautiful cathedral and historical district including the Cabanas ex-convent that has lots of cultural activities, all walking accessible. Also with Xmas decor and activities it should be lots of fun, here in Mexico Christmas day itself is very quiet, the posadas and pastorelas leading up to Christmas eve mass are the best.

They have one of those around town buses that you can take to Tlaquepaque which is really just a shopping maybe lunch tour. The Tequila train is awesome, look up guadalajara jalisco tourism to get exact activities and hotel choices...
