RoadTrip to the East Posted: Thu July 19, 2007 03:09 AM UTC
Hello...My family and I are traveling from Wisconsin out east at the end of august for ten days. We are interested in the coast and we would like to know where the best places are to search for seashells and sanddollars? We would appreciate any ideas on things that we should definately not miss while we are out east... Thank you.

There's a rocky area at Long Sands Beach in York, ME that is good for seashells at low tide. What states are you visiting? I've been in New England all my life. I might be able to give some suggestions.

We will be visiting Maine, and I am not completely positive on where else yet since there seems to be much to see and do. I would love any input you could give. Thank You so much.

Does anyone know of a really nice campground (We are bringing a tent) that is right on the ocean, preferably southern Maine or New Hampshire?

When I was a kid you could find sand dollars all the time on the NH seacoast but not so anymore, unfortunately. I only see them when I'm scuba diving in 20-30 feet of water now. You can sometimes find good shells on Jenness State Beach, on Rt 1A in Rye, NH, especially if you walk all the way down to the northern end, which is private, but note that all beaches are public up to the high water mark and nobody will hassle you anyway. Also, Odiorne State Park is very pretty and not as frequented as the sandier beaches a little further south down the road so you might be more likely to find good shells in there.

I would not miss a whale watch while you're out this way. You should also take a harbor cruise out of Portsmouth or a cruise to the Isles of Shoals.
