Forum Question Posted By: Replies:
San Marino Does my girlfriend require a tourist visa ?
Posted: Tue July 17, 2007 05:50 PM UTC
Hello,
I am thinking of taking my girlfriend on holiday to somewhere in Europe. San Marino seems like the sort of place I wish to go, having not been there before.
My girlfriend is a Thai National, living in Thailand..... I would therefore wish to ask if anyone knows whether I need to get a tourist visa for her. I am a UK national, therefore believe I am not in need of such a visa, is this correct ?
If she does need a visa, where would sh apply, given she is in Thailand.
Many Thanks,
Mark Thomas.

Your gilfriend could start by ringing the Italian Embassy in Bangkok about her visa. UK nationals don't need a visa as far as I know.

She will need a (Schengen) visa. To apply for it at the Italian consulate/embassy.

Yep, as the others noted, both San Marino and Vatican City let Italy handle such issues, as there is no border control for either place. So once she's in Italy, you're OK...

Note that there is (or at least "was") a visa for San Marino - it was a big colored piece of paper that they placed in your passport in City Hall (or thereabouts)...for a nice fat fee...yes, selling "visas" is one way that San Marino used to raise money (maybe they still do ;-) )...but I doubt they really cared what kind of passport they were putting it into ;-)

As an EU citizen you do not need a visa for yourself to enter Italy or (under the agreement between these 2 countries) San Marino. You cannot obtain a visa for another person, your G/F does need one and will need to apply for it herself, at the Italian Embassy in Bangkok, it will cost her €60. However, if it is you who are arranging the trip, you will need to help her with some of the documents she will need to provide in support of her application, such as proof of lodging in Italy: see http://www.esteri.it/visti/home_eng.asp.
