1. go to www.trenitalia.com/en/index.html
2. enter Bologna and Rome for a sample trip 3. Click on the shopping cart icon to see pricing (no, you don't have to buy). 4. Note that there are different types of trains with different prices (slower is cheaper). 5. Note that for all practical purposes, there are only two fares available to tourists: Standard and Amica. The Amica fare is a 20% discount on limited seats, and must be bought at least the day before. It is available on many higher speed trains, but not regional trains. Play with the trenitalia website, and see if you have any questions... Bill

How do you qualify to be an amica? First you have to be female...hahahaha, oh, nevermind ;-)
Unlike all the other discount fares, the Amica fare does not require you to have the Cartaviaggio, so it appears that anyone can get it, as long as you get it at least the day before, and there are seats available at this discounted rate. There are also some limitations on changing the tickets once it is purchased. But, on the whole, it looks worthwhile... Bill

You know, I've wondered about that. I even asked the other day on another thread if anyone had actually purchased an Amica fare, and got no response...it would be nice to know...

Here are some sample fares for tomorrow morning from Bologna to Rome. Each fare is for 2nd class, one way. Note that not all trains go to Roma Termini, some stop at Roma Tiburtina instead. The Amica fare is for limited seats and must be purchased at least a day in advance. There are also some restrictions on changing an Amica fare ticket. Note that slower trains are generally cheaper. All prices are in euro.
Eurostar.........42.00 Standard...33.60 Amica ICPlus...........34.00 Standard...27.60 Amica Alta Velocita'...42.00 Standard...33.60 Amica TBiz.............50.00 Standard...40.00 Amica InterCity........35.00 Standard...25.60 Amica Bill

Rail fares are stable throughout the year, barring system increases. As I noted, the Amica fare is for limited seats and must be bought at least the day before...however, given that there are limits and costs to changing an Amica fare ticket, I would think that you should wait until you get to Italy and know your exact plans.
Otherwise, the Italian rail system does not have all the myriad of pricing schemes that airlines do; there is no such thing as a 21-day advanced fare and all that. For non-residents, for the most part, what you have is Standard and Amica fares. Up until a year ago, Trenitalia had a lot of special, discounted fares, but these are no more... Bill
