Visitng VT this October Posted: Mon July 16, 2007 08:25 PM UTC
My husband & I will be coming to VT in mid October. We plan to stay in Stowe, Vt for a few days. The original plan was to stay in Boston for 2 nights, Stowe, VT for 2 nights, and then Lincoln, NH for 2 nights. We are starting to think that we should just stick to 3 nights in VT and 3 in Boston. We will be flying into Boston. It's our first time to New England and want to make the most of it w/o over dueing it. Will we be missing out by not going over to NH?

You could drive up through the two states. That way you can see some of both. Although I don't suppose you'll miss all that much if you skip NH.

You will see part of New Hamshire as you drive to Stowe via I 93 and I 89. You could stop off at some places in N. H. on your way. It is about a 4 1/2 hour drive without stopping. Once you are on I 89, there should be no traffic backups, so depending on the time leaving Boston, you could visit several places like The capital Concord (Jct I 93 and I 89) and Montpelier the capital of Vermont which is just off I 89. Both are very small cities and can be seen in hours. Stowe is very colorful in October, although mid October will be the last of the foliage. I lived for many years just across Smuggler's notch from Stowe in the Village of Cambridge. There is a lot to see there. Take the Gondola up the Mountain if the weather is clear. Great view. If Rt 108 across the Notch is still open, (After first lasting snow it is closed for the winter) drive over to Jeffersonville and look around and be sure to go to the Jct of Rt 104 and Rt 15 in Cambridge Village and stop at the Boyden Winery and taste some of their products. It is an old working farm where they milk cows, make maple syrup in the spring, and make wine. in season from grapes grown there.

I agree with the other replies. You will have plenty to see and do around VT wihtout going over to NH but if you decide to go to NH too, it is a very easy day trip. You can be in the White Mtns in about an hour. Franconia notch is a beautiful area and the Kancamagus Highway (Route 112) is one of top drives in the country in my opinion. Take Route 302 from Montpelier each to route 112 in NH - it's on all the road maps.
