Hi all,

Reading up on Aguas Calientes seems to remind me of Yangshuo in China. Are they similar in that it's like a backpackers' colony?

Just curious.

Don't know about China. Aguas Calientes sees a lot of backpackers, yes, but surely not all visitors there are backpackers. I'm not. And many other tourists there were not.
If you've read well you have seen that there are very expensive hotels as well. I stayed in H. Presidente which is "in-between".

From what I have read about Yangshuo, people go there and actually stay for awhile; thus the reputation of it being a backpacker's colony. Aguas Calientes does have a lot of economical restaurants and hotels, but it is only on the tourist map as the access point for Macchu Pichu.

Now that I have been to both, I can say definitely much different. Aguas Calientes is a small town on the way to a major destination. It would make little sense to visit Aguas Calientes if you were not going to MP. Yangshuo is a large city with a touristic area which is central to visiting lots of different touristic areas in the countryside.
