| Genoa | CRUISE Posted: Sat July 14, 2007 02:11 PM UTC
We are docking in Genoa between 8am and 6pm, and wondered if anybody knew if this was enough time to get to Milan and back by train, with say 3 or 4 hours sightseeing. Can anyone advise best way to get there

You have a round trip time of about two and half hours by train. Allowing for waiting for the trains, you dont realisitcally have enough time for Milan

Genoa is great - you should really consider spending the day there!

It is enough time because the fastest trains take little more than 1 1/2 hours, e.g., on a weekday at least, dep. Genova Piazza Principe 09:19, arr. Milano Centrale 10:50 (IC) (the next train, however, is at 9:46 and as it's a slower one, doesn't get there till 12:12); return MC 15:10, arr. GPP 16:42 (EC) - last possible train to be able to board your ship by 18:00 as the next one doesn't arrive in Genova till 17:42.
As for "best way to get there", unless you want to drive yourselves or hire chauffeur-driven car, I would say train is the only way, certainly it's the fastest. However, I can't imagine why you would want to go to Milan for a few hours' sightseeing rather than stay in Genova!

I agree that Milano may be a bad idea. Don't forget if you are delayed for any reason, and Italian trains have been known to be late, you are responsible for getting back to the cruise ship at your own expense wherever it stops next. If you don't want to stay in Genova why not look and see what the ship has planned for day trips. If you are delayed on a ship sponsered tour they will wait for you and there will be no extra out of pocket expenses.
