This depends on your definition of 'best beaches'. I find that we all have our own idea about what consitutes a nice beach. There are beaches in Catania but I think they are a little grubby. Catania has a lot of heavy industry so its waters(ocean)are questionable.
We stayed in Acireale(about 20kms north of Catania)but for the beach, we would drive a further 20 kms north to Giardini Naxos where there are superb, clean beaches. There are some nice little restaurants there too, where you can get reasonably priced lunch. Of course, 40 kms is perhaps too far, but that may be your best option. Lets face it, if you have a rental car, 40k is only 30 minutes.

I agree with Domenicocozze. Don't go to the beach in Catania...the water is too dirty. And plenty of people..
We drive to Giardini Naxos from Catania every day almost, and it takes 30 min. More or less..well worth it! Acitrezza or Capomulini are good places too, closer to Catania.
