I will be travelling to Würzburg by car and am looking for a moderately priced hotel either in an area where I can explore the sights by walking or a place in an attractive setting outside center city.

Last year we stayed in the Dorint Novotel Wurzburg - Ludwigstrasse 97070. There was a car park and it cost 115 euros for the 4 of us with no breakfast. Obviously if you are not a family of 4 it will be less.
Ludwigstrasse is off of Berliner Platz (if you have a map) Novotel have a website so you can check it out on there and book online, also - sometimes better rates to go direct through the website :)

Try the Hotel Regina, within walking distance of most of downtown.
