Hi,

I have a couple of questions that I hope someone can help me with:

1. Can I make it to Lucerne and back to Zurich in a day?
2. How do I get from Lucerne to Mt. Pilatus?

Yes, easily. Swiss railways sells a ticket that includes trip to Lucerne (about an hour) and Mt Pilatus excursion. From Lucerne you take a train to somewhere (I forget name) from where you take the cog railway to the top of Mt Pilatus, then return by cable car and gondola to Kriens, from where you can take bus No 1 to Lucerne, or of course you can do the whole thing the other way around.

I can't remember the bus number but from outside the train station you catch a bus on the STREET not the bus station and it goes south. You have a short but somewhat steep hike to the gondola station. The gondola ride is gorgeous. It takes a while but you eventually get there. Then we took the cog railway back down the other side and caught a lake tour boat which took us back to Lucerne. This was in 2002. The ticket included everything except the bus. We bought ours at our hotel but I think the tourist information office would have the tickets as well. It was a very pleasant days outing especially since they were having a heat wave in Europe and Lucerne was very hot.
