Forum Question Posted By: Replies:
Provincia de Buenos Aires Child friendly areas in Buenos Aires
Posted: Mon July 9, 2007 08:42 PM UTC
Dear forum members,

Early October we will arrive in Buenos Aires and spend a few days here before we start exploring the rest of the country. We will be travelling with young children. Can any of you recommend particular areas in Buenos Aires where we should (or should not) find accommodation? Perhaps even some recommendations for accommodation itself (hotel/apartment, medium price)? Any tips where to go in Buenos Aires with small children?

All help is highly appreciated!

Cheers, fam. Van den Heuvel.

There are many parks in Buenos Aires, and many child friendly ones. Also a zoo that your kids should like. Also the Tres de Febrero Park,& Paseo de la Infanta which features a beautiful carrousel.

As for areas of the city I would recommend either Recoleta or Palermo Chico. There is a rental agent for apartments that I recommend on my travel page and as for medium price hotels there are some very good hotels in Buenos Aires at reasonable prices. The Kempinski hotels have two in the Recoleta and one in Barrio Norte that are from $USD 100 to $USD 150 a night. The one in Barrio Norte
Kempinski Hotel Park Elegance is on Avenue Pueyrredon and only one block from a small park that features a carrousel and a just above that is a children's playground.
http://www.kempinski.com/en/hotel/index.htm another good choice is The Art Hotel
http://www.arthotel.com.ar/ another choice that is more expensive is the Loi Suites Recoleta http://www.loisuites.com.ar/ and yet another that is back in the under $USD 150 range would be the Bel Air http://www.hotelbelair.com.ar/ Remember that the Argentines also use the $ sign for the peso so do not get confused on the web site if you see the dollar sign used. If it is in USD it will indicate that.

The city of Buenos Aires maintains a very good tourism web site and would recommend you reviewing the information there. www.bue.gov.ar

Hope this helps and if you have more questions ask away.

Dear Sam,

thanks so much for your fast reply to our question posted here. We have been searching for quite some time on the Internet now and have found some possible locations in the Palermo and Recoleta area. We are thinking of renting an apartment for a few days to settle down into the Argentinian way of life.

Can you give us an idea whether the area Gallo y Cabrera (Palermo, near the Hospital de Ninos), or Lavalle y Esmeralda/Maipu (Recoleta) are good areas to stay with small children?

Do you know of any experiences with ba-h.com.ar or only-apartments.com?

Thanks again!!!

Cheers, fam. van den Heuvel.

You are very welcome, as to your questions Gallo y Cabrera I would say NO,(actually I think this is in Almagro not Palermo) and Lavalle y Esmeralda/Maipu you had indicated was Recoleta....that is not even close to the Recoleta and would not recommend that area either for small children. Did one of the rental agents indicate that was the Recoleta? (And by the way I have never heard of either one of those agents.) If one or both of those agents told you it was the Recoleta then I would find other rental agents to deal with.

Thanks a lot for your reply! Wow, that's pretty clear! You can see we don't know the city at all and have to rely on what is posted on websites. What may help us is if you can give the names of one or two (crossing) main streets of Palermo and Recoleta, so we know we are looking in the right area. I will also send an e-mail to the apartment rental agency you suggest on your site (as there website is temporarily unavailable).

As you found out not all the rental agents are created equal ::)) As for cross streets etc, anywhere around the Plaza Italia bordered by Rep. de la India and Bulnes and Las Heras and Av. Del Libertador. Another area would be bordered by Las Heras and Arenales and Coronel Diaz and Av Scalabrini Ortiz. Both of these are in Palermo. In La Recoleta and Barrio Norte an area bound by Arenales and Av. Del Libertador and Libertad and Av Pueyrredon. Some areas within these are better than others, but for the most part should be safe selections. There are other enclaves that are very nice, such as La Isla, but there are too numerous to mention them all.
