I have heard good things about the Claddagh hostel and Galway backpackers, both located in Eyre Square. It'd be better to use trip advisor and read the reviews first though! If you are looking for hotels, try www.1800hotels.ie or call them on 1800468357 ( It a freephone number) but to be honest youo would want to book quick and always fouble check the hotel by calling ahead as they might have some availability not listed on the website!

don't stay at Claddagh. some of the staff there are snobs. I booked in for a night there, in hopes of staying for a week. (their website said to book in one night online, and when you get there to book in for the week. I'm assuming they were trying to avoid give 10% to the website)
Anyway, it said that from October to May business was slow, so not to worry. I emailed for re-assurance and got it. I moved to galway (from Canada), get to the hostel late (11pm) book in, ask about the weekly rate. The girl tells me not to worry about it and to deal with it in the morning. Next morning, go to try and book in, and the owner looks at me with this 'are you serious look?' and says (like i should already know) that they are all booked up. I told him about what I saw on his website, the email i sent....and he was just 'sorry, nothing I can do'. I was floored. He didn't even offer to call around and find a hostel for me. I had to get my luggage and drag it around town looking for a place to sleep. I finally got accepted into a hostel at 9pm, almost had to pony up either 150 euro or sleep on the street. Luckly the Galway City Hostel let me take someone's spot, who didn't show up!

Sleepzone is a great place too. A top of the line hostel, coming from a guy thats stayed in 40-50 hostels.
