Yangon Division Kyat versus $US dollars
Posted: Sun July 8, 2007 07:56 PM UTC
A question regarding use of money in Yangon. As a visitor, when must $USs be used when is it possible to use local currency for eg. internal air flights, hotels (mid ranged), taxis, etc? And finally, does it make any difference in terms of actual out-of-pocket expenses?

Usually, you will need to use dollars when paying for hotels, buying tickets (everything from air tickets to some bus tickets and boat rides), and buying "official" passes in Bagan, Mandalay, etc. Most tourist type restaurants take either dollars or kyat, but higher end places may want only dollars. You can use kyat in small teashops, at roadside places, and in small markets. More tourist type markets will probably quote prices in dollars. You will get the best exchange rate for kyat in Yangon. You might also shop around for the best rates, they can fluctuate.
