This is not a town, but a city. It is of touristic interest but I do not believe that it is overwhelmed by tourism or by ex-patriot residents. I think that it is much more comfortable than the more famous tourist towns like Acupulco, Taxco and Cancun. I found people friendly and welcoming but not intrusive.
As a city it is safer than most in Mexico, but it is a city. It is in the center of state of Michoacan. This is probably the second most interesting state for arts and crafts in Mexico (Oaxaca being the best.). I think the history of the place to be of interest. The most important "do" is to be friendly and greet people when you enter a store ("Ola") or go up to a stall to buy something, and then say goodbye ("Adios") when you leave. In between you will find Mexicans in general very helpful to speakers of English. The most important "don't" is do not show disrespect to Mexico or Mexicans. Good luck, bob

Total agreement with melosh. Everytime I have visited Morelia, it's been safe and i have never experience a problem, except when it was about parking, that was a pain in downtown, besides that, you can have a very good time there.
