I would like to know the timetables for trains from Melbourne to Ballarat and return and do they run on weekends

They do run on weekends from Melboure to Ballarat Return.

if you are by chance arriving by plane there is a shuttle bus directly from Tullamarine airport to Ballarat - you walk out to the median strip in front of the terminal and look for a helper in a green jacket, he will tell you where to wait, there are many busses leaving from there. I think the bus runs every 2 hours on week days. It costs $25 one way and $45 for a return ticket.
