This is one of those questions that gets asked a lot... however, i don't blame you as the travel books continually mention this train. Lonely Planet is totally guilty in this regard as their books on the Middle East have not been updated in years. (I went to a restaurant in Damascus which was suggested in LP, but they did not mention that it was a French restaurant. Why would I want to eat French food in Damascus?)

The train leaves once or twice a week and is very unreliable... you can check out my Istanbul/Syria/Antakya pages for detailed info on getting between the two spots. There are plenty of buses and you can always says a day worth of traveling by taking a cheap flight from Istanbul to Adana.

Trains in Turkey are not that great... trains are really an after thought in Syria...
