| Århus | To Hire a Car or Not to Hire a Car - That is the Question Posted: Mon July 2, 2007 03:23 AM UTC
Hi Everyone
My girlfriend and I are visiting Århus for this year's festival. We will be there for 5 nights - Sat 1st Sept - Wed 5th Sept. (See also the VT Meetings section. http://meetings.virtualtourist.com/1/meeting-3876- Rather than stay in CabInn in Central Århus, which is ok but we have done that twice before, this year we have decided to book with http://www.tarskovmolle.dk/b&b_priser_english.htm It is 13k from Århus and looks lovely. It says on the website that there is a bus from the Mill into town. However, I gather from Århus tourist information that it is only once an hour and only every other bus goes direct. I also hear that there is only a night bus on one day of our stay ie the Saturday. We are probably going into town every day - So I am wondering what to do regarding transport - Should I rely on the bus / train or should I hire some bikes (might be a bit difficult with or luggage haha) or possibly hire a car. If we did get a car, we could pick it up at the airport and go direct from there to the Mill with our luggage. We also could go for day trips to other towns in the area - Silkeborg, Aalborg, Billund perhaps. My main worry is difficulties with parking. The last thing I need on holiday is to have to spend ages driving around looking for somewhere to park and then to pay a fortune for it. I have very little patience with that sort of thing, living in London and I suspect it will be very busy in Århus as it is festival week. I have never driven in Denmark and have no idea about the rules and regulations. I know nothing about the parking schemes in Århus. I don't know if there are parking meters, multi-story car parks or where to get parking permits. Perhaps there is a park and ride scheme where we could get a bus from just out of towm ... I wondered if anybody living locally had any comments ... I speak some Danish so it's not a problem if you want to recommend a website that is only på dansk. Tusind Tak Mike and Shelley |

Hej Mike,
I don´t know if you´ve checked the cost of hiring a car. VERY expensive in DK. Compare with taxi prices: http://www.aarhus-taxa.dk/Priser Check out www.rejseplanen.dk that will give you details of buses. Århus kommune has details on parking in the city - http://tinyurl.com/2msyj2 I´ve no idea what it´s like during the festival, but I´m sure others can help. Driving in Århus is a doddle compared to London. Having done a driving holiday in Jutland can thoroughly recommend it. Even my partner coped, and he hates being in cars. Other than driving on the wrong side of the road :)) and with dipped headlines 24hours a day, I can´t think of anything important that is different. Maybe see you at another meetup soon Dave

Thanks for that advice Dave - very helpful.
I really did not expect to get an answer from somebody I had met in London. I checked with Ryan Air's car hire division and it really did not seem that expensive to me - It was certainly less than I expected anyway. I think the jury is still out though. I will wait to see what others think before we decide. By the way, while we are in Århus, I am hoping to do a joint event between 3 organisations to which I belong ie VT, Danish Meetup and Couch Surfing. We have 5 people coming so far and are looking for more. Århus is great for a weekend break, especially during the festival - Maybe I can tempt you two ...... Kind Regards Mike

Hi Mike,
Hiring a car would be the most comfortable way to get around. There are plenty of parking in Århus and the smaller towns. Parking is expensive, app. 12 kroner/houly in Århus and 6 kroner/houly in Silkeborg. Only on Saturday mornings it can be difficult to find a parking space, because this is the big shopping day for all Danes, and the shops close early that day. In Århus there is Magasin's parking lot, big and very central. And there is a big parking by the Århus Musikhus. In Silkeborg there are parking everywhere in midtown, but no free parking. Here you need to pay WHEN you park the car and not at the end of the day. So you will need to know from the beginning how many hours you will need, if you are late the fine is around 550 kroner. You should go sailing on the tourist boats when you visit Silkeborg.

Thanks for that information - The latest news is that there are now going to be 3 of us on the trip so the cost per person has come down and a car is therefore affordable.
Somebody said that you have to pay for parking in Denmark using your mobile phone and that there are no longer any parking meters. Is that true ? If so how do you find out what number to call. By the way, we have set up a VT Meeting in Central Århus for Saturday 1st September from 7.00pm onwards, if anybody reading this fancies coming along. We will be meeting initially in the foyer / lobby bar of the CabInn Hotel. It is in Stor Torv, right next to the Århus Theatre and also right by the main festival stage. No doubt we will be going somewhere more interesting after we all arrived but CabInn is not bad place to meet. So far we are expecting about 8-12 people from various groups such as Meetup, Couch Surfing and VT - If you want to join us for a beer or coffee and a chat you would be more than welcome. Please try and reply on the VT Meetings page - Thanks Regards Mike

Hi Mark,
I have not tried to pay for påarking with my mobile phone, so I have no idea how it works.... Unfortunately I am going to Slovenia on 01 Sept. Damn. I would have loved to go to the VT meeting. It is so strange but until now I have missed every VT meeting I signed up for. First one in Kuala Lumpur, missed it by 24 hours. Then one in Dubai, my flight was 24 hours delayed! And now this one... Oh well maybe next time. Enjoy yourselves.

Thanks for trying to help. I guess we will find out one way or another about the parking when we get there.
A quick update re the VT Meeting (as at 16th August - 2 weeks to go and counting) ..... Apart from Virtual Tourist, Shelley and I belong to several other groups with members in Denmark for example "Meetup" and "Couch Surfing". We are fairly active members of all 3 organisations. We are not often in DK so this year we have arranged to meet our friends from all three groups at the same time and the same place. This is how the Meeting is shaping up - excluding Shelley and myself. Couchsurfers - 8 Virtual Tourists - 3 Danish Meetup Members from London - 3 Danish Meetup Members from Århus - 0 Danish Meetup Members from Kolding - 2 Total So Far inc us two - 16 We will update this again nearer the time. Regards Mike
