Can anyone recommend a good hostel in Cairns? Were looking for one that we can walk to just about anywhere or take a short bus ride. Is it worth going to the YHA hostel many people have told me that they are overrated and over-priced? Are the city buses a good way to get around Cairns? We will not have a car and do not plan on renting one. Whats the best way to get up to the northern beachs and rainforest? We want to spend more then a day in the rainforest and Port douglas. Thanks any info would be great :)

HI!
I will recommend The Bellview, just in front of the Esplanade....as long as you don't mind it's more subdued....great warm services.... I don't know how far you intend to travel within Cairns but most of the sites are within walking distance.... Have a page on Cairns if you care to take a look and see if the tips are useful.

Most Backpackers in Cairns are withion walking distance of the city.
I haven't stayed in one here, but all look OK, some better than others. You could book into one for a couple of nights and then scout the rest of them:)The YHA is right in the city area.Gilligans is also, plus others. The bus service here is good. The buses run to the northern beaches and all suburbs of Cairns on a regular basis. Doing the trip to Cape Tribulation, Mossman Gorge etc is not to be missed.Port Douglas has a bcakpackers named Port Of Call, really good. There is a great cheap car hire place just out near the airport turn off. , my sister just used one of there cars. It's name is Older Car and Ute Hire. Phone 0740531066 or www.cairnsoldercarhire.com You can hire under 21 and you don't need a credit card, all things are covered. You may have to pay a little extra for insurance. They start at $25.00 per day, this is cheaper than catching a bus or doing a trip, the bus far is about 28.00 each from Cairns to Port. You could also hire one every now and then to do other trips. I have resently discovered Crystal Cascades, Copperlode Dam and Lake Placid areas...great for a day out.BBQ's and water... ALso you must do a walk around the Tanks and Botanical Garden areas, really great.
