Are the times/days the same all along the riviera? Michele - this is France. Nothing works like that.

Most shops can be relied on to be open between 10 and 12, and between 2 and 6.00 Monday to Saturday. After that, it all depends.

If they open on Sunday they usually close Monday. They may open at 9 or 10, they may close for 2 hours at lunch or they may stay open. They may close at six or keep going until 8.00. Then there's ouverture exceptionelle and fermeture exceptionelle (merci pour votre comprehension)Public holidays are a guessing game. Then there's a strike somewhere all of the time.

Very touristy places can be open right up until 11.00 at night seven days a week. And if you're Madonna, a boutique will open specially just for you.

Welcome to France.

Cheers

Hey Nicelife it's not that bad! Well, okay maybe it's nearly as bad as you make it sound...

Hi Michele,

In answer to your question...

If it's food shopping you're doing larger supermarkets tend to be open from 8 a.m. until 7.30 / 8 p.m. These include:-

Monoprix - a 'general store' with a foodhall on the first floor (opposite the train station)
Casino - has many branches but the largest and best is at 54 Boulevard d'Alsace - in my opinion the best supermarket in Cannes; also it currently opens Sunday mornings
Champion - 6 Rue Meynadier
Bread shops open early morning (but I've never been awake to find out how early! - I think 6ish) and close at 7.30 / 8 p.m. They also open Sundays.

Department stores and large chain stores open Monday to Saturday without a break. these include:-
Galleries Lafayette - Clothes and homeware (40 bd Haussmann)
Monoprix - (see above)

Other types of shops open Monday to Saturday and close 2 hours for lunch except on Saturday when they stay open all day. They tend to close at 7.30 / 8 ish. By the way lunch can start anywhere after 12 and finish as late as 3!

Best of luck with the shopping

Andy

Thank you guys! It pretty much looks like if the shop is open go in - if not don't! At least knowing they close for lunch helps. Here in Melbourne (Aust) pretty much all shops are open 7 days a week at least 9 - 5.30 most open later (no closing for lunch!) and supermarkets are 24 hours, so we sort of get used to shopping when we feel like it, so that's why I asked. Thanks again for your help, forewarned is - well - forewarned.
Regards, Michele

Just in case anyone else would like to know...

1) The grocery shops and supermarkets are all open everyday, including Sunday.
2) Many of the small eateries (pizza/pastry/rotisserie etc) close relatively early daily. I've seen some close at 1.30pm, some at 3pm...I was there for work and every time I return from the festival at 6pm, I see the rows of small eateries all already closed! Then I asked at one of the shops one day and was told that some of them only open at 10am and close at 1.30pm!!
