We want to travel by train from Beijing to Pingyao , stay there for 2 days and then continue by train to Xian.I understand there is some problem , can anybody advise how to do this?

Get your guesthouse (or any guesthouse, for that matter) to help you pre-buy the Pingyao -- Xi'an train tickets. It's not uncommon and not difficult provided you give them prior notice.

You could travel via Taiyuan. Have a look at my page. The place we stayed in Pingyao was gorgeous. You could email the owner and perhaps organise them to pick you by taxi, have a look at the famous Qio family house(something like this)..it is where Raise the Red Lantern was made and then onto Pingyao. We did it the other way round. It cost altogther US$50 but well worth it. You could then get your train ticket organised from Pingyao to Xian through the hotel. Again, we did it the other way round. Any other questions don't hesitate to ask.
