Nürnberg Posting for my Mom
Posted: Thu June 21, 2007 06:14 PM UTC
My mom(needs step by step instructions when she travels) is leaving from Neurnberg on a river cruise and is looking for a hotel that is convenient to the port as well as some local sights since she will have one night in town before the cruise departs. She asked me if my friends at VT might have any suggestions. She is hoping to book in the next few days. Thanks for your help.

the central train stadion ( Hauptbahnhof ) is very close to the historical city centre, and there are a lot of hotels arround ( you can find a list of hotels and the distance to the trainstadion here: http://tourismus.nuernberg.de/v04/pub/index.html?navID=en123&IDS=T2YuL6ed
i dont think there is much sence to book a hotel in close to the habour, because the habour is more a instrial site, aprox. twenty minutes by car (Taxi) from city centre away.

Second what Civilian wrote. Your mother should drop the idea of conveniently getting to the "harbour"* other than by calling taxi.

A hotel close to Nürnberg's Central Station (Hauptbahnhof) would be a good idea if she arrives by train and does neither wish to call a taxi nor bother with public transport. At the same time, a taxi ride the the harbour would probably be some 2 miles or less.

A small, quiet hotel that borders Nürnberg's old town to the north (Central Station is located south of the old town) would be Hotel Dürer, Neutormauer 32. Rooms are small, and your mother would have to rely on a taxi again, then again it is located at one of the more beautiful spots of Nürnberg.

* Sorry, but I was born in Bremen and grew up in Hamburg and if Nürnberg has a harbour, I'm not low on money but actually a millionaire. ;)

Nürnberg doesn't even have a decent waterway -- must be that Rhein-Main-Donau-Kanal... cruise is probably heading for the Danube through the Altmühl valley... very nice scenery!!!

Thanks for the information gentlemen. Her cruise starts in Nurnberg and ends in Budapest, but from your posting it is clear that the harbor is not actually in Nurnberg. My best guess is that the itinerary probably says Nurnberg because of the airport.

well it could actually be... there is a canal that they built under very controversial circumstances some 20 years ago. It connects the Rhine waterway network with the Danube waterway network. In a way Nürnberg would make sense as a starting point because it's a big city with excellent communications. That would make it very easy for everybody to get there.

I have seen pretty large vessels on the canal at Nuernberg - should be quite able to take river cruise ships.

yes, the canal is definitely used for cruises, you can also book a combined Rhine, Main and Danube cruise utilizing this canal starting in Frankfurt and ending in Passau, Vienna or Budapest. The canal leads through some wonderful valley scenery south of Nürnberg, that's one reason why it was so controversial when it was built.
