Is it possible to take a one day trip to Novgorod from Saint Petersburg and
have time enough to visit the town calmly? Bus? Train? Rent a car?

"Calmly" is a subjective term! It is possible to do it in one day. By car it takes about 2.5 hours to get to Novgorod from St Pete. By bus about 3.5 hours including stops. I have been there several times and usually I stay for two days because I love to stroll and calmly take in the sites. last time I was able to get a but at 7am and get there and see most of the city with friends and was done in time for dinner. Most museums close around 5pm and there is not a lot of shopping. There are good restauarnts and cafes however. And so, I dont remember when the last bus leaves Novgorod but I think it is about 730 or 8pm In which case you would have a good 6 or 7 hours to tour the city. Most of the museums and churches are within walking distance of the Kremlin, except for Yurieve Monastary. However you can take a bus or taxi there (taxi about 10 minutesm by bus about 25 from the center). It is possible to to a lot in one day.
