i just plan to look around the gardens. my train leaves at 10:35am from shanghai. Is spending the whole afternoon in suzhou enough?

Where else in China are you going?
If you're going to be in Tongli and Shanghai as well, I wouldn't say there's any garden in Suzhou that's a must-see except perhaps Lion Grove or Master-of-Nets Garden. I would instead use that time to see Tiger Hill and Coiled Gate instead, and also Hanshan Temple if possible. You might want to have half a day plus a little of the next morning in Suzhou.

No, not really. I my opinion you should experience not just see some of Suzhou. A rush to just see kind of misses the point of going to gardens. With the probability of there being lots of visitors it will take extra time to find that quiet moment. You might do better spending extra time at a special park in Shanghai.
